Abstract

The Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region is a widely used molecular marker for plant identification due to its strong species-level resolution, especially among morphologically similar taxa. ITS sequence analysis provides reliable genetic data for phylogenetic reconstruction and the authentication of medicinal materials.

In this study, the ITS region of Strychnos nitida collected from Pu Luong, Thanh Hoa, was isolated, sequenced, and subjected to phylogenetic analysis. The obtained ITS sequence was 724 bp in length. Comparative analysis with reference sequences in GenBank and phylogenetic reconstruction indicated that the studied sample was closely related to S. nitida and other species in the genus Strychnos. These results confirm that ITS is a useful molecular marker for the identification of S. nitida and may support quality control of medicinal materials.
