Abstract

Vietnamese literature on the theme of war, especially in the genre of prose, has often been marked by the names of male writers. However, since the early years of the 21st century, with the “explosion” of many female writers and the growing prevalence of a space for “re-evaluating” war, the theme of war has no longer been solely the “intensive domain” of male writers. Venturing into this vast, challenging, yet highly compelling subject, female writers such as Lê Minh Khuê, Lý Lan, Bích Ngân, and others have achieved noteworthy accomplishments. In particular, their works have brought inspiration and fresh reflections not only on the subject matter (war) but also on the way it is written. The distinct imprint of gender has created a unique and captivating quality in the war-themed prose of contemporary female writers. Exploring the gender imprint in contemporary female prose on the theme of war, our article focuses on clarifying the influence of gender consciousness on the ability to penetrate this subject; it delves into analyzing the shift and narrowing of artistic space from the vast expanse of the battlefield to the confined space of the family - as one of the most evident manifestations of the feminine imprint. Approaching and portraying the theme of war in their own way, reflecting and presenting a war “with a female face”, is also how female writers contribute to the evolution of contemporary literature on the theme of war.
