Abstract

The act of asking is the use of language to persuade the listener to provide information or answers about an event or issue that the speaker does not completely comprehend or is uncertain about. The act of indirect asking is the use of a question whose verbal purpose is not to ask, or the use of other types of sentences whose verbal purpose is to ask. In the “Mua hoa cai ben song” (Mustard flower season by the river) short story collection by Nguyen Quang Thieu, the speech act of indirect asking has its own characteristics and values. This article studies the act of indirect asking which verbal purpose is not to ask.
