Abstract

In response to King Ham Nghi's anti-French proclamation, after 10 years of armed struggle (1885-1895), the Can Vuong uprisings led by Confucian scholars in Thanh Hoa province all ended in failure. However, upon reevaluation of these uprisings, it becomes clear that they were the starting point for an ideology with a modernizing tendency. This ideology emphasized patriotism, solidarity with the people, sacrifice for the nation and country, and a shift from political struggle to armed resistance, among other issues. This represents a significant transformation in the thoughts and actions of contemporary patriotic Confucian scholars.
Keywords: Thanh Hoa, Can Vuong, Confucian scholars, scholar ideology.
