Abstract
The study was conducted at the animal farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishery at Hong Duc University from February 2022 to July 2022 to evaluate growth performance, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and carcass characteristics. A total of 10 barrows and 10 gilts were used to measure growth performance, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and carcass characteristics. Each pig was individually notched with an ear tag and kept separately by gender, with 5 barrows per cage and 5 gilts per cage. The results showed that the average daily gain (ADG) was low, at 262.82 g/day. The percentage of lean meat in Sus scrofa Jubatus reached 73.28%, and the fat percentage was 7.91% in barrows. The percentage of dry matter in meat was 30.62% in barrows and 27.75% in gilts; protein was 21.03% in barrows and 20.07% in gilts. There was no significant difference between the FCR of gilts and barrows (P > 0.05). These results suggest that using barrows or gilts for fattening should have no effect on the growth performance, feed conversion ratio, and carcass characteristics of Sus scrofa jubatus.
