Abstract

Existential sentence is a special form of Vietnamese. In terms of grammatical structure, it does not have subject; in terms of meaning, it denotes the existence (in the broad sense) of things and phenomena. The entity which is in a state of existence is indicated by the complement of the sentence. There are typical cases in each sub-category of existential sentences (the syntax consists of necessary and sufficient parts). There are also atypical cases with the addition of morphological elements, the alignment or the modification of component arrangement in the sentence structure. This article explores the types of
existential sentences in Nam Cao' writings.
Keywords: Nam Cao, syntax, meaning, existential sentence, complement.
