Abstract

Many international researchers have affirmed that teaching English through films is very effective in developing English skills. However, there are not many investigations in this issue conducted in Vietnam. To study the effectiveness of this modern teaching and learning method and material on students’ speaking skill, the researchers conducted an experimental study named “Using short films to develop speaking skill for first year English- majored students at Hong Duc University”. The data collected from survey questionnaires, interviews, classroom observation as well as the results from the pre-test and post-test show that the students who studied speaking English through films participated more actively to the lessons and performed better in speaking English. Therefore, an application of using short films in teaching English to improve speaking skill is worth considering and needs to be investigated more.
