THE RESEARCH RESULTS ON THE SELECTION OF G0 AND G1 GENERATIONS OF THE SAO VANG RICE VARIETY IN THANH HOA PROVINCE

Abstract
This study was conducted in Thanh Hoa province from the 2022 Summer-Autumn crop to the 2023 Spring crop, applying the Vietnamese National Standard TCVN 12181:2018 to evaluate, select, and maintain the agro-biological characteristics of the Sao Vang rice variety through the G0 and G1 generations. At the G0 generation (Summer-Autumn 2022), from 559 initial plants, off-type individuals were eliminated, leaving 356 lines for further evaluation, among which 209 lines with desirable characteristics were selected. Nine lines were preserved, while the remaining 200 lines were grown as individual line plots (10 m² per line) in the G1 generation (Spring 2023). Through evaluation and selection, 29 lines meeting the required standards with high uniformity were obtained. The selected G1 lines had a heading time of 100 days and a maturity duration of 128 days. The average plant height was 98.0 cm, the main panicle length was 24.5 cm, the number of panicles per hill averaged 5.6, the number of filled grains per hill averaged 101.8, the 1000-grain weight averaged 23.7 g, and grain yield reached 6.9 kg per 10 m² plot. The selected lines exhibited very low variation in growth and morphological traits, particularly in growth duration, plant height, and panicle length, indicating high uniformity and stability. In contrast, yield components showed greater variation, providing favorable conditions for selection. The selected lines also showed moderate resistance to pests and diseases and good lodging resistance, demonstrating good adaptation to the ecological conditions of Thanh Hoa province.
