Abstract

Community-based tourism is a form o f tourism in which indigenous people play a crucial role, they are the ones who preserve traditional values of the local in order to contribute to the development of tourism in particular and economic activities in general.
This article evaluates local residents’ awareness of tourism resources and types of community-based tourism; the level o f willingness to participate and level of participation in community tourism activities of coastal residents of Thanh Hoa province. Based on applying research method of Jules Pretty- a social researcher towards assessing the level of community participation, the research shows that local population of the coastal area of Thanh Hoa is just spontaneously participating in community tourism activities. Also, the study analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the local people participating in community­ based tourism activities, thereby making some suggestions to upgrade the level of residents ’ participation in community-based tourism activities in coastal regions of Thanh Hoa.
