ENHANCING INTERACTIVE SPEAKING AND LISTENING COMPETENCE FOR LOWER SECONDARY STUDENTS IN READING COMPREHENSION OF ARGUMENTATIVE TEXT
Main Article Content
Abstract
Interactive speaking and listening competence refers to the ability to engage in communication proactively and effectively. This includes active listening, appropriate responses, clear articulation, and the flexible development of conversational flow based on context and communicative partners. Fostering this competence supports students in developing collaborative communication, critical thinking, and teamwork - key competencies for 21st-century citizens. Instructional activities focused on the reading comprehension of argumentative texts offer considerable potential for enhancing students’ interactive speaking and listening skills. This paper outlines the theoretical foundations of interactive speaking and listening competence, clarifies the pedagogical objectives of argumentative text comprehension, and identifies the characteristics of interactive communication activities within this instructional context. Based on these foundations, the paper proposes practical strategies for developing interactive speaking and listening competence through the teaching of argumentative text comprehension. The flexible application of these strategies can contribute significantly to the cultivation of learners’ communicative language competence, thereby aligning with educational reform goals and the demands of global integration in the digital era.
