Abstract

This study investigated the physical and mechanical properties of cement mortar by using bottom ash to replace natural sand at proportions of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, respectively. Experimental results indicated that increasing the bottom ash content resulted in decreases in the fresh unit weight, dry unit weight, compressive strength, and flexural strength of the mortars, while water absorption and drying shrinkage increased.
All mortar samples in this study exhibited compressive strengths ranging from 15 to 40 MPa, meeting the technical requirements specified in TCVN 4314:2013. In situations where natural sand is scarce, bottom ash can be employed to partially or fully substitute natural sand, depending on the project's technical requirements and actual conditions.
Keywords: Cement mortar, bottom ash, natural sand, physical property, mechanical property.
