CURRENT STATUS OF ORGANIZING PLAY-BASED ACTIVITIES TO DEVELOP SOCIAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR 5 - 6-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN WITH MILD INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES IN PRESCHOOL SETTINGS
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study investigates the organization of play activities to develop social communication skills among 5–6-year-old children with mild intellectual disabilities in inclusive preschool settings. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 85 preschool teachers and in-depth interviews with 12 teachers in Thanh Hoa, Phu Tho, and Son La provinces, Vietnam. The results indicate that teachers have positive perceptions and frequently implement supportive strategies. However, the effectiveness of these activities is constrained by children’s characteristics, large class sizes, limited specialized guidance materials, and insufficient family collaboration. The findings provide a practical basis for improving children’s social communication skills in inclusive preschools.
