Abstract

In the Chinese writing system, the nǚ radical (女) is not merely a formal structural component of characters but also embodies symbolic values that reflect how traditional society constructed and interpreted images of women. By examining commonly used Chinese characters containing the nǚ radical that relate to women, family relations, moral norms, and emotional life, this article analyzes the relationship between character structure and gendered thinking within the historical context of Chinese society.

The study adopts a sociolinguistic approach, combining etymological analysis with the construction and examination of a corpus of Chinese characters containing the nǚ radical, based on dictionaries and actual usage. The findings indicate that this radical plays a significant role in encoding social conceptions of women, particularly through semantic fields associated with family, moral virtues, and mechanisms of ethical evaluation. On this basis, the article proposes a critical and contextualized approach to the study and teaching of Chinese characters, aiming to reduce the unreflective reproduction of gender stereotypes in contemporary society.
