Abstract

Folk songs are a part of the spiritual life of Vietnamese people. Since there was no written literature, folk songs have been a place to deposit the feelings, thoughts, and aspirations of workers. In folk songs, the image of women is recreated in many aspects, both mentally and physically. In the body configuration, the woman appears with many the pure Asian beauty; while in the depiction of spiritual life, women often appear as victims of gender inequality. Although gender theory with the focus on feminist theory has not been systematically formed in Vietnam, since ancient times, voices affirming the female identity have been quite clear in traditional folk songs of Vietnamese people. Based on a survey of traditional folk songs that have been collected and published, the article identifies, analyzes and explains the characteristics and experiences of women, thereby gaining a broader and richer perspective of the image of women in Vietnamese literature.
