THE CURRENT SITUATION OF MATHEMATICAL CONCEPT FORMATION IN 5 - 6-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN AT KINDERGARTEN
Main Article Content
Abstract
The transition from the final year of preschool to the first year of primary school requires that children aged 5–6 be equipped with essential prerequisites to feel confident and adapt to the shift in their main activity from play to formal learning. One fundamental prerequisite is the development of early mathematical concepts, which provides a foundation for logical thinking and for learning mathematics in Grade 1. This paper investigates and assesses the current status of mathematical concept formation among 5–6-year-old children in several preschools, focusing on key domains including quantity– number – counting, size, shape, spatial orientation, and temporal orientation. It also offers an overview of factors that influence children’s mathematical concept formation in preschool settings.
