Abstract

At the beginning of the twentieth century, Vietnamese Catholic literature developed with diverse authors and works. This study examines Catholic literature from 1900 to 1945, based on historical- cultural and statistical - categorical methods. The sources show two main creative: clergy and laypeople. The works (poetry, prose, plays, travelogues) cover themes ranging from praise and instruction to inner contemplation, existential and spiritual sensibilities, especially in the poetry of Han Mac Tu. The channels of circulation newspapers, publications, performances, and oral transmission expanded the influence of Catholic literature. The results indicate that this body of literature both reflects the life of faith and contributes positively to the modernization of national literature.
