Abstract

John Maxwell Coetzee believes that society consists of many fragments and chaos, so people living in that society are also imperfect, deadlocked, and broken. With his talent and delicate sense, in the novel, Coetzee builds many types of characters that are typical of postmodern literature. This research explores Coetzee's perception of humans through many character types: flawed, imperfect, exiled, abandoned, skeptical, and cognitively distrustful. From there, it contributes to exploiting and explaining the layers of content within the work; At the same time, we can see the writer's concern about issues related to the relationship between people in South African society during the reign and post-Apartheid period.
