Abstract

This study addresses pleonasm - defined as the use of redundant words, phrases or sentences in speaking or writing - as one of the characteristics of English sentences. In this study, it is hypothesized that the redundancy of expressions in pleonasm is only outward appearances. Accordingly, the study analyzed all 2,767 verses of William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar and found 35 verses to illustrate the classification of pleonasm: syntactic pleonasm and semantic pleonasm as well as its intended use in this work. The study has come to a number of conclusions, the most important of which is that the redundant words, phrases and sentences used in pleonasm are not useless; in fact, in some situations they are essential. By repeating part of a message, pleonasm emphasizes or clarifies a particular idea. This conclusion confirms the above hypothesis.
